Principal's Report

Celebrating our Elders

Congratulations to our wonderful school community for our extraordinary final week of Term 2.  Our NAIDOC Assembly typified the magic of Margate Primary School and to be honest we did not anticipate the enormity of bringing each element of the 2023 NAIDOC theme "Celebrating our Elders" together would create.

Thank you to the hundreds of special guests who attended our NAIDOC Assembly.  Children were thrilled to share their learning, the yummy damper and personalised gift bag to acknowledge how important you are to them.

Special recognition and congratulations to the exceptional efforts of staff and students who were key to the success of our whole-school First Nations Activities Day and NAIDOC Assembly.

Attendance

As we move through the school year, sometimes regular school attendance can be challenging.  It's important your child keeps up good attendance habits though.

Going to school everyday means your child has every chance to learn and be around their friends and teachers. Everyday adds up, to benefit your child now and in the future.

If you are having trouble getting your child to school, please talk to us.  We will listen and help in anyway we can.

If you are looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, please vist the anything can happen website.

Cross-Country Congratulations

Grade 5 student Shani excelled at the Symmons Plains All Schools Cross Country and will be representing Tasmania and Margate Primary at the 2023 School Sport Australia National Cross Country Championships in Canberra at the end of August.  Well done Shani, we are all very proud of you and wish you all the best in Canberra!

Naplan 2023 Individual Student Reports

Children in Grade 3 and 5 who participated in NAPLAN at the beginning of Term 1 will be soon bringing home their individual student report.  The report shows individual student achievement against the national average for their year group.  If you have any questions relating to your child's assessments, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher.

How to read your child's NAPLAN report is outlined in the following video link: Reading the NAPLAN

Kindergarten 2024

Kindergarten 2024 enrolments are open!

Is your child turning 4 this year?  If so, they are eligible for Kinder 2024.  Throughout Term 3 and 4 our Kindergarten teachers offer Pre-Kinder sessions to ensure families and children are set up for the best possible start to school.  Please call our school office on 6267 2238 to register your child for enrolment, to book a tour of our wonderful school and for more information regarding Pre-Kinder sessions (commence 28th August).

Class Placements 2024

Decision making regarding class placements is a complex and lenghty process in which teachers, support staff and our leadership team work extensively to balance the needs of each individual student.  Decisions are guided by the following priorities:

  • The educational needs of the child
  • The social and emotial needs of the child
  • The balance of gender in the class
  • The number in each class

Student input: This term children in Prep to Grade 4 will be asked by their teacher to nominate two children they would like for classmates in 2024, children are asked to consider students who have positive impact on their learning.  We encourage families to talk to their children about who they nominate.

In preparation for High School, Grade 5 students are not asked to nominate preferred classmates in Grade 6. In Term 4 children will participate in a "Preparation for Grade 6 Workshop" which explores leadership, friendship and "positive strategies for coping with change".

Family/carer Input: We appreciate that there are times when there are extenuating circumstances which need to be considered.  If you wish to flag information to be considered when finalising your child's placement, please complete our 2024 Class Placement Request online form. To be considered this information needs to be received by the end of Term 3 2023.

Access the form via QR code or hyperlink: 2024 Class Placement Parent/Carer Requests

If you are unable to access the online form, please contact the office.

Extenuating circumstances may include:

  1. Concern due to issues that have been raised with the school or teacher/s previously that would significantly impact their child's learning, behaviour or wellbeing.
  2. The request is necessary due to an issue of concern that the child has and is significant and would be supported by school support staff, doctor or psychologist or other professional involved with the family.

Class for 2024 will be shared in the second last week of 2023.  Children will participate in a transition half day with their new teacher (if possible) and importantly with their new class in preparation for 2024.

Please note if requests made by children or families/carers are not feasible you will be contacted prior to 2024 classes being announced.  Any concerns regarding 2024 class placements communicated at the end of the school year will be noted and reviewed Week 5, Term 1.

We thank you for your trust and flexibility in determining the best placement for your child/ren.

Finally, I would like to thank Leah Waugh who is currently Acting Principal.  I experienced a complex ankle injury at work on the 16th June which has not "heeled" (pun intended), frustratingly I still do not have a confirmed return to work date.

News from Gumnuts

LIL BUILDING

Due to some flooding in the LIL room before the holidays, we are having to undertake major works in there before the room will be available for use again.

Please keep your eye on our Facebook page (Gumnuts LIL at Margate Primary) and/or Seesaw for updated information.

In the meantime, Gumnuts Play and Explore Sessions on a Friday morning are currently being held in the Kinder room closest to the LIL building.

GUMNUTS MOVE

Due to low attendance numbers, we have made the decision to cancel Gumnuts Move sessions moving forward.

Thank you to those families who have attended and supported these sessions, but we have decided that it's no longer viable.

Thank you for your understanding.

GUMNUTS SESSIONS

Play and Explore sessions will now run from 9am to 11am on Friday mornings and Gumnuts Groove will continue as normal on Wednesday mornings from 9am to 10am.

Term 2 in the kitchen, the main focus has been refining the skills that the students have learnt during their time in the SAKG program and build up teamwork skills.  We have enjoyed making a huge variety of foods.  Students have kneaded and rolled pasta, soft tacos, lavosh bread and made delicious accompaniments to create feasts each week.

Our very last session/s together were a celebration where students hosted a special guest for the Long Table Lunch. This time together was a wonderful way for students to show off their kitchen skills as they prepared and cooked a 3 course meal.  Thank you to every guest who took the time out of their day to support the Grade 6's.  We all had a great time!

While the kitchen has been a constant hive of activity, the garden has been quiet with recovery needed after an unfortunate event.  This also means that our supply of fresh food has been temporarily cut off.  Should you have an abundance of greens or winter produce, we would gladly make use of some this term.

Story Dogs with Rosie

Rosie is very proud to annouce she has received her new sponsor printed vest.  She is sponsored by Tasmanian Veterinary Hospitals at Kingston, and highly recommeds them to anyone requiring the services of a caring and wonderfully knowledgeable vet team.

Knitting Club

Term 2 we have been running a Knitting Club every Thursday in the Library.  The students who come are mainly from Year 2 but we have also had some Year 1s and Year 3s attend.  Each week we have about 10 students and 2 or 3 grandmother helpers.

We have a lovely group of students each week.  Everyone is enthusiastic about learning to knit.  The students are all at different stages of learning to knit and those more adept are always willing to help those who need it. The grandmothers are kept very busy as well.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

More information can be found about the NCCD process at: https://www.nccd.edu.au/

Or Alternatively contacting Deb Lie/ Liz Finlayson, AST Support Teachers at Margate Primary School

Safety of Van Morey Road
