Gumnuts Early Learning

At Margate Primary School we believe that parents are their child’s first, ongoing and often most influential teacher. Gumnuts Early Learning supports families to give children the best start to support their transition to school. Gumnuts Early Learning programs support children with their development in an atmosphere of fun and creativity.

Gumnuts Early Learning is a free program for young children (Birth – 4 years old) and their families. It helps parents and their child get to know their local school and other families.

They operate in all Tasmanian Government primary and district schools and Child and Family Centres.

Schools focus on the needs of their community and make connections with other groups, services and agencies in their area.

When you spend time playing with your child at Launching into Learning you make a real difference to their future.

Useful information for parents can also be found on the Department of Education’s ‘Great Start Web Page:-

What will the sessions be like?

They will be fun and engaging for families and the children. It is an opportunity for families to meet each other and for early childhood educators in the school (Teacher and Assistant) to provide programs to support your child’s talking, reading, physical, social and emotional skills in an atmosphere of fun and creativity. You might see families, children and teachers playing alongside each other, having fun and learning together through a variety of programs such as play and learn sessions, music, water awareness, kinder gym and baby massage.

Why is early learning important?

At this young age, learning through play and exploration alongside the people that mean the most to them is a really positive experience for children. Experiences in their earliest years are valuable to children’s ongoing development and have a major impact on their future achievements at school and later in life. We know that supporting children’s learning experiences before they begin school helps with successful transitions into school, and is more effective in achieving success than trying to help children ‘catch-up’ once they are at school.
